It’s late, you’ve got the munchies.
You’re about to grab the leftover pizza from yesterday.
Oops! Now what?
Project 42 * works for anyone. Here’s the idea. Get together a list of your favorite 42 foods and the way you love to have them prepared. You can add or subtract from your list anytime. You can accumulate a wide variety in every category. Multiple recipes for seafood, or for chicken. You can include foods you buy at a restaurant or pick up from the grocery deli. You can put foods on it that you have delivered, or things you buy frozen.
What if you could eat your absolute favorite foods from delicious recipes you were familiar with for 2 to 3 straight weeks and never repeat a main ingredient?
Project 42!
In the beginning of your own Project 42, identify what your main go to “alternatives” are. Get delicious foods you can easily go to when you’re trying to avoid repeating a specific food. My habit food was wheat. It’s everywhere. Getting beyond it inspired Project 42. There are amazing alternate grains. I’ll share more ideas in the blog coming soon.
Those late night cravings deserve a fix ahead of time.
Build foods on your Project 42 list that include the easiest, fastest, best tasting foods you can imagine. Put on foods that you will look forward to eating, especially when you use them as an alternative to your habit foods.
Why 42?
42 is enough variety, but not too much. Those who plan ahead, usually win. You can do a lot of personalizing with the idea too. Take 7 main foods you love (beef? seafood?) and list 6 recipes for each. Eat each main food once, then go to a different one on your list.
Follow through like that, and not only did you keep your rotation, you also just went 42 days without eating the exact same thing twice. Awesome! Now go back and make the recipes healthier. Cut down the calories to manage weight? There are a lot of ways to improve, but on your terms, with things you love to eat.
It adds up nicely. With 42 favorite foods, you can eat 2 main meals a day and go 3 weeks without repeating. Or if you eat 3 main meals a day, you can go 2 weeks without repeating.
And, it’s a cosmic number! In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the number 42 is the answer to the “Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything”. The fictional supercomputer Deep Thought calculated the answer for over 7.5 million years.
